World Ocean Day 2013

It’s that time of the year when people from all around the world celebrate our ocean by doing their bit to create awareness and encourage the preservation of our oceans. June 8th is World Ocean Day, please go out and do your bit to encourage the protection of our Ocean and do whatever you can to prevent the pollution, over-fishing and destruction of our amazing ocean.

If you can, head down to your nearest beach and try your best to fill a bucket with rubbish. If ten people reading this post can do it, thats 100 litres of rubbish that won’t end up in the sea.

2012: A Year in Review

As part of my planning for 2013 I started looking at my training and racing logs for 2012 and it made me realise that it had to be one of the biggest years of my Open Water swimming career. Not only have I achieved some great results, but it has been a phenomenal journey. I have been given some amazing opportunities and the support I have received has been fantastic. There have been a few people that have really believed in me, and backed me 100%, and to them I am most grateful.

Lebbiano Residence: Florence, Italy

After having spent close about ten days on the Italian Adriatic coast in a town called Riccione, my wife, son and I headed into Tuscany for a week of sight-seeing and relaxing. The months leading up to World Masters Championships in Riccione had put a lot of pressure on us as a family, all the hours spent training twice a day, and this was our chance to catch up on some lost time and spend some valuable family time with one another.

Vanessa has a tendency to take control of our trip planning and rightly so, she does a fantastic job. The strategy was to find somewhere on the outskirts of Florence where we could get away from the crowds and spend some down time relaxing, we found Lebbiano Bio-Resort. Situated in Scandicci, up in the Tuscan hills 6km from Florence, the resort is an absolute gem that offers natural beauty and at the same time it was everything that Pure Planet Racing believes in.

Pure Planet PHILosophy

Living the Pure Planet PHILosophy: A wife’s role by Vanessa Emslie.

Phil and I have always been ‘ok’ when it comes to being environmentally aware, but since he’s joined up with Team Pure Planet, it’s been something that has been discussed in a lot more detail at the dinner table. Being at home on maternity leave meant I had a few months to really see how and where we can live the REduce, REuse and REcycle philosophy at home.

So this is what we’ve done so far:

Recycle:

1. We are lucky to have space for 2 bins in our bin-drawer: one for waste and one for recycling. Ladies Mile Road dump in Constantia is great – arrive, drop off your mixed recycling and they will separate into glass, paper, plastic and tin. R5 tip for the guys working is also appreciated! I have become a lot more meticulous about ensuring everything we can, is put in the correct bin. Educating our domestic about recycling is still an ongoing task. We are now heading to the dump once a month, as opposed to our previous once every two or three months. Continue reading
